What makes Fruška Gora Serbia special is the natural geological phenomenon due to its formation. It was created of rocks from almost all geological periods. Fruška Gora used to be an island during the period of the Pannonian Sea that lasted about 9 million years and dried out 11,700 years ago.

FRUŠKA GORA MONASTERIES

Fruška Gora monasteries are a must-see when coming to Serbia. 35 monasteries were built here between the 15th and the 18th century, and 16 of them can be seen today.

During the Ottoman rule up until the 19th century, these monasteries were crucial in preserving Serbian tradition and integrity. National sacral art and relics were stored here for centuries. Most monasteries are concentrated in an area that is 31 miles long (50 km) and 6,21 mi (10 km) wide.

Given that the monasteries were founded during a period of great invasions and migration, they were important gathering places for the Serbian people. They were built by Serbian ruling families and with donations from pilgrims. This is an extremely important heritage.

Fruška Gora monasteries are protected by the state and declared Monuments of Culture of Exceptional Importance in 1990.

Here are some of the Fruška Gora monasteries that can be visited today: Beočin, Bešenovo, Divša, Grgeted, Jazak, Krušedol, Kuveždin, Mala Remeta, Novo Hopovo, Šišatovac, Vrdnik-Ravanica, etc.
